Taking care of your dozer now means less downtime in the future. Dozer maintenance is crucial to the longevity and performance of your machine, so we’ve compiled a list of must-do daily, regular, and occasional dozer maintenance tasks that will keep your machine in tip-top shape.
Daily Maintenance Checklist
Daily maintenance is crucial to spot issues that may arise with regular dozer use, no matter what kind of dozer you operate- whether it be a Cat D7 or a Cat D3. Before you start working, check these areas:
Undercarriage: Check for loose bolts and abnormal wear on tracks, rollers, idlers, and sprockets. Then, take a look at your dozer’s track tension- too tight can cause additional wear, while too loose and your tracks may derail and cause workday delays. Finally, clean the undercarriage when debris buildup occurs to prevent premature wear.
Hydraulic Systems: Inspect hoses and connection points for leaks or damage.
Fluid Levels: Check engine oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid, and fuel levels.
Regular and Occasional Maintenance
Aside from daily maintenance, these areas need to be considered every once in a while to keep your dozer operating efficiently. While we’ve provided general estimates, check your operator’s manual for timestamps that are specific to your dozer.
Weekly:
Lubricate Moving Parts: Lubricate parts like cylinder pins and bushings, track rollers, idlers, and blade pivot points.
Blade and Attachments: Look for cracks, excessive wear, or loose mountings. Also, check the cutting edge and replace it if excess wear is present.
Electrical System: Check the battery and electrical system of your dozer to ensure proper operation and catch problems before they hold up your jobsite.
Every 250 Hours:
Replace Oil and Filters: Switch out the engine oil, oil pan and replace the air filter.
Undercarriage and Tracks: Perform an in-depth inspection of the undercarriage and focus on the tracks. You know it’s time to replace your dozer tracks when you notice cracks, damaged guide rails, or reduced tread depth.
Every 2000-4000 Hours:
Perform a full machine service every 2000-4000 hours. Check the entire machine, replacing parts that have become damaged or are showing significant wear and tear. Make sure you look over internal components like the hydraulic system and external components like the frame. A full machine service will ensure your dozer stays in great shape.
