3 Compact Track Loader Maintenance Myths Busted

Do you have a used compact track loader in your fleet? If you do, you know how important proper maintenance is to worksite performance. Read along as we bust 3 compact track loader maintenance myths so that you can keep your loader operating smoothly.

Myth 1: You Only Need to Check the Undercarriage Once a Week

Reality: The undercarriage is the most expensive part of your compact track loader, which makes looking after it extra important. Dirt, rocks, and debris can build up daily, especially when working on muddy or rough ground. Ignoring undercarriage maintenance can lead to track misalignment and even undercarriage failure- which is an expensive fix.

Quick Fix: Inspect and clean your loader’s undercarriage daily and use a pressure washer to remove packed mud or debris. Check for loose bolts, rollers, or sprockets and ensure they’re replaced as needed to prevent costly repairs down the line.

Myth 2: Track Tension Doesn’t Matter Unless Your Tracks are Falling Off

Reality: Track tension affects everything, from fuel efficiency to wear on the motor and sprockets. While it’s true loose tracks can cause derailment, tight tracks can cause just as much damage by straining your compact track loader and wasting power. Being proactive about track tension means a longer lifespan for your compact loader.

Quick Fix: To look after your tracks, check track tension once a week. Start by tilting and pushing your loader’s bucket against the ground to lift it. Then, measure the distance between the third roller and the track. If the distance is more than an inch and a half, tighten your tracks; if its less, loosen your tracks.

Myth 3: Grease it When it Starts Squeaking

Reality: By the time your compact track loader starts squeaking, damage has likely already occurred. Dry joints, pins, and bushings wear fast and need attention before squeaking starts, otherwise, you’re risking potential breakdowns.

Quick Fix: Grease your loader’s pivot points daily and pay special attention to them in dusty or wet environments- and don’t forget about attachments. Grease your attachments before using them for the best performance when paired with your compact track loader.
